Wessex Military Band Winter Concert 2025

Welcome to the Wessex Military Band

From its humble beginnings as a youth band in 1981, the Wessex Military Band has grown into a vibrant and cherished part of the South West’s musical landscape.

In 1990, the band was invited by the British Army to become the Voluntary Band of the Army Air Corps, based at Middle Wallop near Andover. At the time, the Corps did not have its own regimental band, and this collaboration filled that gap with pride and professionalism. Although the Army disbanded its volunteer band system in 1993, the spirit and dedication of the musicians endured – and so, the Wessex Military Band was born.

Thanks to the Ministry of Defence’s support, the band reformed under its new name and proudly adopted the emblem of the recently decommissioned Wessex Regiment, featuring the iconic Wyvern. One of the band’s early highlights was performing for HRH the Prince of Wales and HRH the Duke of Kent – a prestigious honour that helped set the tone for the years ahead.

When the founding Bandmaster retired to Austria in 2006, dedicated members stepped up to ensure the band’s continued success. That same passion continues to drive the band forward today.

Like many musical groups, the COVID-19 pandemic brought challenges, but the Wessex Military Band adapted. By 2021, outdoor rehearsals resumed, and performances returned — including concerts at Bridport’s Bucky Doo Square, an invite-only event at Nothe Fort in Weymouth, and the Bridport Remembrance Parade. Indoor rehearsals recommenced in early 2022, bringing fresh energy with new and returning members.

Today, the band performs regularly in open-air venues and continues its tradition of monthly concerts at Bucky Doo Square — a firm favourite with both locals and visitors. Looking ahead, the band is thrilled to rekindle its European connections with a visit to Hausdülmen for the renowned Schützenfest, and hopes to return to other international events across France, Germany, Italy, Malta, and Spain.

The Wessex Military Band is a diverse group of all ages and abilities. If you would like to join us and can play a brass, woodwind, or percussion instrument, or are interested in joining the Corps of Drums, please get in contact on 07535 354433 or email enquiries.wessex@gmail.com
